Australian researchers have developed a new magnesium alloy they say is a frontrunner in the race to make a new generati sale michael kors purses on lightweight engine block.



The CRC for Cast Metals Manufacturing with funding from the Brisbanebased Australian Magnesium Corporation have developed the material and called it AMCSC1.



Developing a magnesium alloy that can be used in the high temperature conditions found in modern car engines has been the goal of researchers for many years, said Professor David StJohn, a materials engineer with CAST.



He explained car manufacturers were being driven by US and European regulations to reduce the weight of cars to maximise fuel economy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. They were also being required to maximise the number of car components able to be recycled.



Magnesium is very attractive because its properties mean we can achieve weight reduction as well as enable recycling, said Professor StJohn.



To date aluminium has been preferred to magnesium in engine blocks because of price. But Professor StJohn said the more recent demands for weight reduction had brought magnesium to the fore as it had a good strength to weight ratio.



The engine is the heaviest part of a car and the engine block makes up to a quarter of the engines total weight. An engine block made from AMCSC1 weighs just 14 kg. This makes it 70 per cent lighter than one made from cast iron engine, and 25 per cent lighter than one made from modern aluminium.



Magnesium also has high shock and dent resistance and will dampen noise and vibrations significantly more than aluminium.



Not only that, researchers claim the alloy could save 200 kg of greenhouse gases over the lifetime of a threecylinder car, and more in larger vehicles.



FrontrunnerProfessor StJohn said CAST developed AMCSC1 to specifications set by Austrian engine designer AVL. The alloy has passed AVLs bench trials and is now considered a working concept.



The next step is to interest one of the automotive companies into developing an engi sale michael kors purses ne block, he said.



The alloy is currently being showcased in the engine block of a threecylinder Volkswagon Lupo at a trade conference in Aachen, Germany.



Professor StJohn said there were five other teams competing to develop a magnesium alloy for use in engine blocks.



This is emerging as a real frontrunner, he said. Not only does it achieve the property requirements but it actually casts into shape very well.
