Scotlands Chief Statistician today announces the release of a report on emissions and removals of greenhouse gases from Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry LULUCF for England, Scotland, Wal purses and wallets es and Northern, Ireland: 1990 2009, which will appear on the National Atmospheric Emissions Inventory website. The LULUCF sector includes carbon stock changes, emissions of greenhouse gases CO2, methane and nitrous oxide by sources and removals of CO2 by sinks from land use, land use change and forestry activities. Removals of greenhouse gases are conventionally present purses and wallets ed as negative quantities.Greenhouse gas emissions and removals are reviewed every year and the whole historical data series is revised to incorporate methodological improvements and new data. Changes to UK LULUCF emissions were first reported in February when UK level GHG emission statistics were published. There has been a change to estimated removals of CO2 from the atmosphere for the LULUCF sector, largely due to the use of new data from the 2007 Countryside Survey, which supersedes the previous Countryside Survey from 1998. The new survey has been used to identify land purses and wallets use change matrices and most significantly this has resulted in a change in the estimated amount of land converted to cropland. There have also been a number of other revisions to the LULUCF sector. The overall result of these revisions is that net removals of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere are now higher than previously estimated for all years from 2002 to 2008. Net greenhouse gas emissions in 1990 were 2.518 Mt CO2e in the 2008 inventory and 2.104 Mt CO2e in the 2009 inventory. In 2008, they were 4.474 Mt CO2e in the 2008 inventory compared with 5.604 Mt CO2e in the 2009 inventory.Historical statistics for net Scottish greenhouse gas emissions from all sources will not be updated until the full greenhouse gas emissions statistics for 1990, 1995, 19982009 become available in September 2011. A note explaining that the historical data will be updated in September has been added to the front of last years publication Scottish Greenhouse Gas Emissions 2008. Relevant data attached to that publication have been similarly noted. purses and wallets
