The City of Abbotsford is setting up citywide composting in order to eliminate food and organic material from mk bags wholesale the garbage stream.



The program will reduce greenhouse gases and emissions associated with landfills and reduce tipping fee costs for the city, said the citys acting director of water and solid waste, Karl Filiatrault.



Although a start date isnt fixed in stone, the city hopes to have the program up and running by the summer of 2012, Filiatrault said.



Residents will get starter kits that include educational materials and compost collection containers to collect organic household waste such as fruit and vegetable peelings, food scraps and coffee grounds, which can then be emptied into larger curbside yard waste cans for pickup.



The program will begin with single family and duplex homes that have garbage collected by the city, mk bags wholesale while multifamily, commercial and industrial properties will be added later.



Eventually, recycling and compostables will be picked up weekly and garbage will be collected biweekly.



Once the program is in place the city will reap cost savings as compostable waste generally costs about half the tipping fee of regular garbage.



Landfill tipping fees run about $92 per tonne, while composting currently costs about $38 per tonne.



Whats more, the compost can be turned into valueadded by products such as fertilizer and topsoil.
